For some reason, the factory just can't seem to install a good exhaust system. This is true no matter what kind of car you buy; even on a Corvette, the exhaust is the first thing to be replaced. In this era of catalytic converters, you have to be careful about what you replace and when; however, cat-back systems (everything downstream of the catalytic converters) are always fair game.
Fortunately, cat-back exhaust systems are not very hard to install, but it is definitely a two-person job. A visiting 1995 Mustang GT offered a chance to see for ourselves. We used a Flowmaster American Thunder (#17212) cat-back system with two-chamber mufflers and polished tips. The instructions say it's not necessary to weld the pipes, but of course you can if you want. We contacted a local exhaust guru and he said it was not necessary.

Advantage
But what exactly is the advantage of a cat-back exhaust besides ease of installation? Most factory mufflers are designed to be very quiet and especially non-intrusive inside the vehicle. The average car buyer doesn't want to hear their exhaust nor feel it inside the cabin. As such, the exhaust tends to be very muffled and restricted. This generally reduces the engine's ability to make more power much the way you'd feel if you had to breathe out through a straw while running.

Installation

Once the stock assembly has been removed, you will then need to install either the 24" long intermediate pipe (for 2004 trucks only) or the 18" intermediate pipe (for 2005+ trucks). We used the 18" pipe. Insert and fasten the intermediate pipe, then install the muffler, tailpipe extension, and final tail pipe with exhaust tip. Use the supplied 3 inch clamps for all joint connections.

Finally, with all of the exhaust pieces mounted loosely, check the exhaust assembly for fitments and clearance, then tighten the whole system. Make sure there is at least 1/2 inch of clearance between the exhaust and body panels to prevent heat-related problems with the truck. Once you are done, connect the truck battery again and inspect all connections and clamps after test driving the vehicle.
